Keratoplasty (penetrating keratoplasty, DALK)

Deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty for the first time in Armenia was performed in Armenia at Malayan’s Eye Center at Cornea-Uveitis department in 2013. Penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) hase been done since 1986 and more then 150-200 patients underwent PKP per year due to corneal blindness. The indications for PKP are keratoconus, chemical injuries, corneal scars and ulcers. DALK is an innovative type of keratoplasty, when only superficial layers are transplantated. The innermost layer of cornea is kept due to which the graft rejection rate decreases 10time. So, DALK is advocated when inner layer of cornea isn’t involved in processes. The indications for DALK are advanced keratoconus, superficial corneal scars etc, when superficial layers are affected.
