The Pediatric department of the Ophthalmological center after S.V. Malayan exists from 1978. Pediatric ophthalmologists focus on the development of the visual system and the various diseases that disrupt visual development in children. Pediatric ophthalmologists also have expertise in managing the various ocular diseases that affect children. Our ophthalmologists are qualified to perform complex eye surgery as well as to manage children's eye problems using glasses and medications. Pediatric ophthalmologists typically also manage adults with eye movement disorders (such as strabismus) due to their familiarity with strabismus conditions.
In the department examined, operated and received treatment patients with eye inborn and acquired different illnesses, eye global penetrate and non-penetrate injuries. The following operations are done in department:
- Inborn and acquired or second extraction with len’s implantation
- In case of primary and secondary glaucoma goniotomy, trabeculotomy, sinustrabeculoctomy, anterior chamber draining with valve
- Surgical correction of strabismus
- Scleroplastic operation
- Amputation of neoplasms of eyelids and membranes with or without plastic
- Correction of inborn and acquired ptosis
- Plastic operation in case of eyelid’s inversion and sinblefaron
- The wound’s primary and late microsurgical cultivation in case of penetrate traumas
The head of the Department is Ruzanna G. Harutyunyan, PhD, assistant professor of Ophthalmology chair at YSMU. She passed fellowship in the USA, on speciality of Pediatric ophthalmology, particularly retinopathy of prematurity.
During the day we examine around 50 children with diseases, such as myopia, long-sightedness, strabismus receiving professional help of high level.
Every month around 30 patients are operated in the department. The doctors of department pay much attention to the modernization of their knowledge, practice skills and are well-informed about today’s achievements pediatric ophthalmology.
Today the our department together with neonatologists (sponsored by AECP) is conducting a program, which is the first put in Armenia and confirmed by Armenian Ministry of Health. The program is ,,Early detection and treatment of retinopathy of premature,,. The department’s doctors in 8 NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) clinics in Yerevan and Gyumri are busy with the problems concerning the early diagnosis and treatment of new-born’s pathological manifestations of premature.
Till now 2000 premature were examined, for 70 were done photolasercoagulation of retina. Around 50 children have been sent to St. Petersburg in the IV and V stage of the illness for vitreoretinal surgery. For early detection and prophylactic treatment of ROP (retinopathy of prematurity) Pediatric Department has all necessary modern equipment (Retcam, Diod Laser).
