Ocular Plastics and Neuro - Ophthalmology Department

Oculoplastics, or oculoplastic surgery, includes a wide variety of surgical procedures that deal with the orbit (eye socket), eyelids, tear ducts, and the face. It also deals with the reconstruction of the eye and associated structures.

Ocular plastic services department was formed in 2005. This department organizes treatment of the patients with eyelid, lachrymal and orbital diseases. The head of the department, Dr Armine Gharakashishyan, PhD did full fellowship of oculoplastic surgery in USA University of Rochester, NY and in India, LV Prasad Eye Institute.


The following surgical procedures are performed in the department: 

1. Dacryocystorhinostomy with silicone intubation 
2. punctoplasty 
3. blepharoplsaty 
4. correction of ptosis 
5. correction of severe ptosis with silicone rode 
6. excision of lid tumors with lid reconstruction 
7. orbital reconstruction 
8. enucleating with implantation 
9. gold weight implantation for correction of lagophthalms 
10. correction of ectropion and entropion 

Chronic tearing is very common complain and the main reason is nasolacrimal duct obstruction. 
The oculoplsatic services department is the only in Armenia where the patients with tearing can undergo dacryocystorhynostomy with silicone intubation. This surgery can be performed and for congenital and for acquired chronic dacryocystitis. 
Ptosis is characterized with droopy upper eyelid. Ptosis is not only cosmetic defect it is also condition that can district the function of the eye. The severe ptosis with poor LPS function was very challenging for ophthalmologists many years. Now S.Malayan’s Eye Center is the only in Region where patients with this diagnosis can be treated by plastic correction of ptosis with silicone rode. Silicone rode is recognized as the best material all over the world for treating this diagnosis. 
Eyelid tumors are also very common complains. Tumors can involve more than 50% of the lid margin. Sometimes surgeon has to remove all lid margins. In our department patients with lid tumors are treated by excision of tumors and lid reconstruction by different plastic techniques. 
Lagophtahlmos is a condition that develops after facial nerve palsy. This condition is also not only cosmetic defect. It can be very dangerous for eyes. The surgical procedure of gold weight implantation is the newest method for correction of lagophthamos. Our department is the only one in Armenia where the patients with facial palsy can get treatment for correction this defect.
